Investigating the Relationship Between Science Diplomacy and Global DGT: The Role of Inclusive Metascience Observatories (IMSO4DIPLO)

The IMSO4DIPLO project is funded by the Transatlantic Partnership (T-AP), which brings together ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council, National Science Foundation (NSF) and funders in a range of other countries.

Working in a consortium led by Cassidy R. Sugimoto at the School of Public Policy at Georgia Institute of Technology, and involving researchers from the US, Poland, Brazil, France and Canada, we will be exploring the role of meta-scientific knowledge and expertise, and the organisations that hold it, in the practice of science diplomacy.

Project summary

This project is examining the role of evidence-informed science diplomacy as a strategic instrument to strengthen democracy, governance, and trust (DGT).

The project will utilise qualitative and quantitative methods to:

  1. Understand the relationship between science diplomacy and DGT;
  2. Conceptualise and operationalise metascience observatories and investigate the extent to which they can be leveraged to improve science diplomacy;
  3. Explore how threats to DGT could be mitigated and opportunities seized through inclusive metascience observatories.

The outputs will include both academic-oriented products, as well as communications to policymakers and the wider public, honouring the practices of open science. In addition to these products, outcomes will include communities of practice for science diplomats and training opportunities for early-career researchers.
