Visiting researcher programme

The visiting researcher programme at the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research is open to researchers who are employed in Universities and appropriate organisations, who wish to spend a period of time in Manchester working at the Institute on their own research. Researchers are appointed an academic advisor for their study with us.

Three professionals sat around a laptop in an office.

You need to identify an appropriate academic staff member who wishes to host your research visit and who might share your research interest. A full list of MIOIR staff can be found on the 'Our people' page.

Completed application form and a current CV should be returned to Deborah Cox.

Academic visitors can attend for a period between 1 and 12 months as part of one visit.

A bench fee to cover university costs is applicable for a research stay; the current rate for academic visitors is £5,400 per year.

EU-SPRI

MIOIR welcomes visiting researchers from EU-SPRI member organisations through the EU-SPRI early career and PhD researcher mobility programme. This programme offers a unique opportunity to engage with a network of 19 leading research organisations in Europe, specialising in Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy.

ECRs & PhD students benefit from a reciprocal no-fee arrangement and can visit another member organisation for up to 3 months. MIOIR has been part of this network since its inception in 2010.

Visiting doctoral students

To visit Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS) as a visiting student, follow these steps:

  • Identify and contact an AMBS academic you wish to work with, securing their agreement to supervise you. Use our online academic staff directory for information. Note: Honorary staff do not supervise visiting students.
  • Once you have an agreement, the proposed supervisor must complete the ‘HUMS Doctoral Academy Visiting PGR Approval Form’ before your visit starts.
  • The visiting student will then complete an online application form and submit any required documents as instructed by the Admissions Team.

Note: If your visit exceeds two months, you must meet IELTS or equivalent language test requirements unless you have studied in the UK within the last 5 years or have a degree from an approved English-speaking country.

Visiting student fees

Band 1 fee will give the visiting PGR access to university facilities. Current rates are listed here.

Strategic Partnerships and Fee Waivers

Visiting PGRs from strategic partners will have tuition fees waived. For other institutions, fee waivers may be granted at the school's discretion based on School-level partnership arrangements.

Admissions queries should be addressed to: HUMS Doctoral Academy.
